I think its a good amount. You would be very comfortable with that salary. Infact quite a many of us manage in much lesser than that (20-22K for most of them). Once you get to know about the things here, its quite possible to adjut expenses here.
Accomodation is the major expense. If you can get a good affordable apartment, then things would be really comfortable. Then ofcourse for your son, Kommune would pay qaurterly allowances to your wife as well..
Dont know about any private medical insurance though.

Why would one need a private medical insurance when it is available from government for free?

I do agree with arianashok, we do not need pvt. insurance.
Private insurance [+ pension] comes into picture mostly when it is part of employment contracts and it is applicable only for the employee not for their family, unless we make special agreements.
