Image This is a new initiative of IID where the effort is to pair an Indian with a Dane, taking into account the needs and wishes of the person concerned. While this could open doors to new job opportunities for some, it could help others in getting better acquainted with all aspects of Danish society such as education, politics, investment & banking, law, films, music et al. Most importantly it would help the Indian mentee to hone up his or her Danish speaking skills.
Mentor Network would facilitate one-to-one meetings between mentee and mentor, where they meet as equals, have a common purpose and add value to each other. Pairing would be done as per mentee's educational and professional background as well as personal goals.

Vision

Every Indian in Denmark feels and becomes a valuable member of this adoptive community of theirs. In the process they should realize their dreams & potential and progress successfully with their life in Denmark.

Process

Mentors and mentees register online with IID. Upload a short profile of themselves along with their wishes, goals and expectations. The mentor network then matches them and arranges the first meeting in the presence of a IID board member. Following this they take on the mentoring process forward on their own. They send a quarterly report to IID, elucidating their progress, concerns, and promise of the future as they see it. All the mentors and mentees get together once a year to celebrate their progress and success.

Mentor's Role & Responsibility

Foundation of your relation with mentee is the goals and objectives of your Mentee. Starting point would be the wishes and needs of your mentee, using which you both may draw up an objective mentoring plan. As a mentor it is of utmost importance that you are confidential, honest and unbiased. You must be able to question, listen, guide your mentee and facilitate networking with other Danish social or professional networks. Finally, as a mentor we would like you to share your experience with others on the Mentor Blog for the benefit of wider audience. There may of course be no personal references or sharing of confidential information here.

Mentee's Role & Responsibility

This demands active participation on your part. You set the agenda, present your goals, objectives and needs to your mentor and draw up an objective mentoring plan. Time is precious for both your mentor and yourself, so meet up always on time and stick to the time plan. Come well prepared for each meeting, with in-depth questions, and at the same time have an open-mind. Try as far as possible to speak only in Danish in order to make best possible use of this opportunity to hone your Danish skills. Lastly, it is important that you maintain a strictly professional (most certainly friendly) relationship. You must ensure that your mentor does not feel awkward or discomforted at any time and ensure that there are no misunderstanding between yourself and your mentor.

Ever since the opening of a new ``Work in Denmark`` division at the Danish Embassy in India, Denmark has seen a heavy influx of Indian professionals. Once a destination known only for its milk and later made famous by the Mohammad cartoon, Denmark suddenly seems to be exciting a lot of Indians as an alternate work destination to the popular ones like USA, UK and Australia. This can only be attributed to USA losing its sheen and the new Danish Green Card Scheme.

Whatever be the reason, we Indians have decided to move to Denmark, even if only temporarily. But do we know enough to make this move smooth, easy and enjoyable? Do we know anything at all about the work culture, Danish mindsets and their attitude towards us? Is it, at all, necessary to learn about Denmark and its culture to be able to work and live her? Answer to the last is simply YES. Denmark and Scandinavia in general is quite different from USA, UK or even France and Germany for that matter, and most certainly a whole different world for Indians who have never been to the West.

The above stated were challenges that bothered a lot of us who moved to Denmark. And the same impelled us at IID, to start the Indian Business Club. IBC is a networking hub for the Indian professionals working in Scandinavia with their Scandinavian counterparts as well as other European coworkers. It is also a focal center for Indian professionals who seek help to understand and integrate with the work culture of their adoptive land.

Vision

Indian professionals should be the preferred professionals for Danish employers and Indians should be a big brand in Scandinavia, through their exceptional contribution at work place.
